About John

John Barnes is a Managing Director and Wealth Partner at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management.

As a co-founder of The Barnes Chung Lally Group, John is a steady and reliable presence in clients' lives, helping them discern what they want to accomplish and devising a more direct route to those ambitions. With more than 30 years of experience in wealth management, he offers perspective and practical guidance that stem from an intuitive understanding for people and their priorities.

Driven by a committed work ethic, John takes pride in helping people "get financially organized," facilitating a refined caliber of strategy and advice designed to support their long-term aspirations. John's approach centers on understanding each client's needs, asking insightful questions, and assembling personalized "game plans" tailored to their objectives. Clients from diverse backgrounds, including business owners, athletes, entertainers, surgeons, and medical specialists, trust John's attentive listening and synthesis to pursue their financial goals.

Working in concert with his team, John connects clients to the capabilities that significant wealth can require: tailored portfolio management, including access to the team's proprietary investment program; wealth planning; tax-sensitive wealth transfer; pre-liquidity-event planning; business sale and succession planning; and banking and lending. John relates that his client relationships tend to be deep and long term: "Our interactions are founded on trust," he says. "Clients can sense that I care deeply about them and the people they value."

John joined J.P. Morgan Wealth Management in 2023, moving with his team. Previously, he spent four years with First Republic Private Wealth Management, where he was a Managing Director and Wealth Manager. Earlier, John was a Senior Vice President at UBS Financial Services, where he served for more than ten years. He began his career at Merrill Lynch in 1994, after earning his B.S. in Finance from Arizona State University.

Beyond his professional commitments, John actively contributes to his community as a board member for Alzheimer's Los Angeles and as a mentor to college students on financial literacy.

A proud third-generation Californian, John resides in Manhattan Beach with his wife, Agatha. They enjoy spending time with their kids, attending Laker games, and are big college and professional football fans, making for busy weekends. In addition to his family activities, John fosters a healthy and balanced lifestyle by staying active through running and participating in various recreational sports.
